3. Nutrient Claims
A nutrient claim is a statement on a food pack that relates to a particular nutrient.
For example, 'monounsaturated', 'cholesterol free', 'salt reduced' and so on.
There is a Code of Practice for food manufacturers that outlines specific minimum and maximum levels that must be met when these claims are made.
Examples that are commonly seen on margarines and oils include:
Salt Reduced: the food must not contain more than 75% of the sodium (salt) content of the same quantity of the usual product, and must not contain more than 600mg of sodium per 100g of food.

Cholesterol free: the food must not contain more than 3mg cholesterol per 100g.

Omega-3: the food must contain no less than 200mg ALA (the plant form of omega-3) per serve.

Polyunsaturated or Monounsaturated: polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fatty acids must be no less than 40% of the total fat content of the food, and the amount of saturated fat must be no more than 28% of the total fat content.
